GETTING STARTED

Getting started is one of the hardest things in the world to do. Many would like to lose weight. They know they should exercise regularly and begin a diet. Getting started is what is hard. Just thinking about it doesn't get the job done.

The same is true concerning spiritual matters

Getting started is hard. Often we make promises at the beginning of the year, but before long those resolutions have been laid aside. Here are some things that often come to our minds:

  • We ought to attend church services each week. We know just going to church now and then isn't doing us any good and probably isn't what God wants from us. We realize that we ought to get the kids into some Bible training before they get too old. It's just hard to get started.

  • We ought to say prayers to God as a family. This would especially be good as we eat dinner together. But it always seems like we are in a hurry. It's just hard to get started.

  • We ought to be reading the Bible more. It's just hard to get started. Maybe reading isn't your thing and by the time you get home, feed the children and get them to bed, you are just too tired.

It is hard to get started. And there is no magical formula that will change that. It has been said that if you do something everyday for 30 days it becomes a habit or way of life with you.

Here are a few suggestions that may help:

  • Mark it on your calendar and keep it as you would any appointment. On your calendar, mark "Go to church" on Sunday. Then, when Saturday comes, get everyone to bed at a good time, set the alarm, because you have an appointment with the Lord.

  • Leave a note on your bathroom mirror reminding you to say a prayer. Take a moment and thank the Lord for the day. Ask the Lord to help you to find Him and please Him.

  • Put your Bible on your nightstand. If you are not familiar with the Bible, start with the Gospel of Mark or Luke. Read just a few paragraphs. Think about what you read. Consider it. Open your mind to the words.

Keep doing these things. Before long, you will find that these are a regular part of your life.
